TOM SWIFT AND HIS MOTOR CYCLE
Published in CD-ROM by Quiet Vision (31 March, 1999)
Author: Victor Appleton

The Starting of a Great Tale
Being an avid reader of science fiction novels of all kinds, I found the first novel to feature Thomas A. Swift quite interesting. Reading what was expected of the future in 1900 allows us to reflect on our world. While Tom didn't have modern luxuries, such as computers or tasers (the latter of which is actually short for Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle, a later novel in the series) he made the best of the technology he had and later created new technologies. For a sci-fi fan, this book will excite the mind

Tom Swift discovers Atlantis
Sorry, National Enquirer. This is a work of fiction. I read this book at the same time as Tom Swift and His Electronic Retroscope. The title was changed for the paperback edition which is what I have. The hardcover's Tom Swift and His Spectromarine Selector. For those who've never read it, and are wondering what it's about, what's written above sums it up. Tom Swift and his friends have a naval commander on board their plane, the Sky Queen, when a Swift cargo jet carrying Tom's latest invention, the Spectromarine Selector, mysteriously crashes. The commander, Tom finds out through a phone call from his chief of security, Harlan Ames, is an imposter. The real commander had never left Washington. Tom and Bud go to Fearing Island, his spaceport and research facility. They take one of his jet- marines and discover a sunken submarine. They think it's an enemy sub when they discover tools stamped with a "V" for Varada Steelworks. A company taken over by the new government of Brungaria. Tom's father calls his friends in Washington and the truth comes out that it was an American submarine that had gone down and the captain had used Varada tools and they were a souvenir from the time he'd first entered the Navy. Tom's driven off the road by someone in a black car because he's in a race with the Brungarians to see who'll control Atlantis. Another expedition is mounted. Longneck Ebber, the accomplice of the first saboteur, stows away and tries to him but he fails. Tom Swift wins another battle in the Cold War and claims Atlantis for the United States

Tom Swift Terror on the Moons of Jupiter
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1981)

Great Series to Introduce Young Boys to Science Fiction
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.

This second story in the series features Tom on a mission to explore the moons of Jupiter, where he and his friends find an alien space probe trapped on Io. They must free the probe while avoiding deadly sabotage from within their mission and the harsh, volcanic environment of Io.

A super nova of action and science fiction!
I'd say the book was great! Even though I have only read the book twice, it's still one of my favorite science fiction books of all time for teenage reading. Read the book you might like it.

Great Place for Youngsters to Discover Science Fiction
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.

In the third story of the series, Tom must protect an alien space probe recovered from Io, one of Jupiter's moons, from theft while seeking to communicate with the artificial intelligence within. The story sets up the later works in the series as the probe helps Tom develop a hyperdrive and thus launch space exploration well beyond the moons of Jupiter.

native grassland conservation & research in SE AZ
THE VIEW FROM BALD HILL: THIRTY YEARS IN AN ARIZONA GRASSLAND, Carl E. Bock, and Jane H. Bock (University of California Press, Berkeley CA 94720, 196pp.): For about twenty-five years, Drs. Carl and Jane Bock (both of them professors at the University of Colorado) have spent their summers in research at the National Audubon Society's 7,800 acre Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch 60 miles southeast of Tucson. Originally part of the Babocomari Grant, the Research Ranch and the land surrounding it had been heavily grazed by cattle for many years until 1968, when the Appleton family, who owned it at the time, removed the cattle altogether and dedicated the Ranch as an environmental preserve and as a lab for ecological research. The Bocks arrived soon afterward. This very readable book relates what they have learned over the years about an arid grassy region left entirely alone to be its natural self. Their book tells an exciting story about an increasingly rare kind of landscape.
